The brief for this project was for a complete overhaul of the existing plot to incorporate a ‘sense of arrival’ at the front of the house, a new ‘field’ area, new hard surface and the clear definition of ‘areas’ within the garden. It was also specified that natural, reclaimed materials should be used where possible.
Our vision provided for a new entrance to the property with a sweeping drive to the front of the house, a ‘cottage brick garden’, a ‘growing’ garden for fruits and vegetables, a wildflower meadow, and a terrace and pathways built from reclaimed Yorkstone with a sunken entertaining circle incorporating a mixed media bench seat built from reclaimed brick found on site.

This client was very clear in requiring a family garden with level lawns and a waterfall as the main focal point. An existing decked area was to be removed and replaced with a new hard surface area. A lighting scheme was to be installed and the project was to be complemented by a soft landscaping planting scheme.
The first issue to tackle was that of the levels as there were potential ‘sight line’ issues with a neighbouring property. Some significant work and 150 tonnes of spoil later we were able to create a raised natural stone terrace with steps to the lawn, planting beds at the foot of the terrace with mirrored panels at the rear to create a larger appearance, a secluded circular deck under a weeping willow as well as installation of a lighting system throughout the grounds.

The design for this project was created four years before the build started by the Orchard Priory founder Ross Gandon. The site was wholly a gravel based drive with very little feature, basically a blank canvas. The only remit from the client was to use an existing cherry tree and a lead fountain which had never made it out of the garage.
We decided upon a formal approach with a sweeping, traditional gravel drive and formal lawns with sandstone pathways to the front of the house. We used the circular shape of the house as our inspiration and created a contoured parterre garden. The fountain was placed at the centre of a square parterre vegetable garden, lawns were installed and a number of feature areas were created including a ‘white’ garden (all white flowering plants) which included the transplanted cherry tree as its centrepiece.
